American Dream Still Alive and Well for Immigrants, Report Says
Economic assimilation remains strong, with greatest rewards for best educated

Washington -- Immigrants to the United States continue to find a land of opportunity both for themselves and for their children, according to a new report.

“America offers dramatic mobility for immigrants,” said Ron Haskins, the author of Economic Mobility of Immigrants in the United States, during a teleconference July 25, 2007. “The great story of America is that it still offers a job to first-generation immigrants and better jobs to their children.” Haskins serves as a principal of the Economic Mobility Project, a collaborative effort involving individuals from four major U.S. think tanks, which recently issued the report. The Economic Mobility Project is an ongoing examination of the so-called American Dream, a concept that embraces social justice, social advancement and equality of opportunity.

Legal immigration to the United States has grown substantially in recent decades -- from 3.3 million per decade in the 1960s to 9.1 million in the 1990s, according to the Department of Homeland Security's U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services. The State Department reports that between 2000 and 2005, 3.7 million immigrants became citizens and the United States granted legal permanent residence to 5.8 million people.

Estimates of the number of illegal immigrants in the United States vary widely. The Pew Hispanic Center, a nonpartisan research group, calculates an unauthorized population of 11.5 to 12 million as of March 2006, based on Census Bureau and other data. Haskins estimates that 500,000 undocumented or illegal workers arrive each year, most of them from Mexico.

Haskins did sound a note of caution: “Historically, the U.S. economy has successfully created opportunity and economic mobility for immigrant families, but the scale of recent immigration -- and especially of poorly educated immigrants -- could be cause for future concern.”

Educational attainment has a dramatic effect on the wages of both first-generation and second-generation immigrants, and therefore on economic mobility, the report shows.

There is not one typical immigrant, according to the report -- there are two. And an accurate portrait of new arrivals is complex: a much higher percentage of legal immigrants have advanced degrees than is true for the nonimmigrant population, but large numbers of immigrants -- particularly undocumented workers from Latin America -- have relatively low levels of education.

A recent study by the National Science Foundation found that, unlike less-educated immigrants, 67 percent of immigrant scientists and engineers cited family reasons or educational opportunities as their primary reason for coming to the United States, and only 21 percent cited job or economic opportunities. As of 2003, there were 3,352,000 U.S. scientists and engineers who were immigrants.

Historically, immigrant workers have on average earned more than nonimmigrant workers, as have the children of immigrants, the so-called “second generation.” In 2000, the most recent year for which statistics are available, second-generation immigrants continued to earn more than nonimmigrant workers, by 6.3 percent (versus 17.8 percent more in 1940 and 14.6 percent more in 1970).

First-generation immigrants, however, earned 20 percent less in 2000 than the typical nonimmigrant worker (versus 6 percent more in 1940 and 1.4 percent more in 1970), according to U.S. Census data, the source of all statistics for the report.

“The U.S. economy seems to be increasingly rewarding education,” said Stuart Butler, an expert on economic policy studies at the Heritage Foundation, a conservative research institute.

High school graduates from Mexico working in the United States earn less than nonimmigrant workers, but they earn eight times as much as they would if they remained in Mexico, Haskins said. “The American economy provides a huge boost to the mobility of first-generation immigrants,” even those with less education, and even if they earn less than nonimmigrants, he added.

The report shows that the children of immigrants attain higher levels of education than their parents -- and indeed, are more likely to attain college degrees and advanced degrees than the children of nonimmigrants.

The report concludes, however, that the economic prospects of the second generation are very much tied to their educational attainments. “Economic assimilation appears to be working well,” Haskins says, but “the children of low-wage, poorly educated immigrants may well have an uphill climb to continue reaching economic parity with nonimmigrants.”

1) in this article it shows what is the true reason why people fly to the US. In here it says that in part it helps economically to improve in the united states. More that 45% of the people that help in the production of materials are from the immigrants.
Hola Maria Isabel,

I am in here in north carolina. You don't know how much I miss you!! This loko that brought me into here left me. That stupid loko made me suffer from Monterey all the way to California. When I got into the state of Texas I saw many people suffering con un pie quebrado. When I entered by running after the migration police I saw them killing with there guns. I said " Ay no dios mio ya me mataron cuidame y protege a mi novia." Right now I am looking for my mother, and I don't find her but I will try to do the best to look for her. But yesterday I thought to have seen her. I remembered that she had used always the dress when she gave me to eat. I will try to go and look for her where I saw her yesterday. Mi amor you don't know how I had struggled to come over here. I think that I am looking at sheeps when I look in the sky. Yo estoy loco al parecer!! When I got into the city of Houston, I tried to get in into the subway, but that loco pedaso de m***** didn't let me in just because he saw me like if I was a piece of crap. I am trying to come in with this people, and try to adapt with them but they make it impossible to get me in with this society. I hate them mann!!! I love you!! you don't know how I miss you, I would like you to be here with me. When I get a job in here I will try to earn enought money to bring you over here. I think that in here the life is much better because you can go and look for a job and win much more money than you win over there in one week. I have many things to tell you!. You don't even imagine how I miss you. You are like the half of my body, with out you I would not live. I fill incomplete because you are not with me. I love you and I wish you the best. I will try to keep in touch with you. And remember that I will always have you in my heart. When I have enought money I will go and look for you. I will try to look for the residency that way I can go and look for you and marry you. Remember that I will be always waiting for you. You can always count with me! I will be sending you money and a letter.

Hi Diego,
I am having some rough time in Honduras in this moment. I am trying to have some extra jobs to help me economically, but I am making it worst. Right now I am working as a soccer player, but they don't pay me enough that is why I need to look for another place to work. My money is coming down to an end. I don't have almost any money left in the bank account. I am living in  a place near the hospital, it very neat and there are no group of gangs. But I am losing the house because I haven't paid the rent tax for almost three month now. The bank is taking everything from me, that is why I am telling you that I am leaving to the Spain. I have a friend that went to Spain over a year ago, he is sending me postcard, and telling me that he is having a great time over there. He told me that he is earning a lot of money from a team that is in the second division but pays well. I will try to go over there and meet him that way I can look for another team to play. I will try to make enough money to built my house over there in Spain, I only have a children in which I will leave him with my sister while I make money to bring him here. When I arrive over there I will try to look for a place to stay while I find my friend, I know that it will be a little difficult to go all the way to Spain but I will try it. My family is going to be here till I earn enough money to bring them here. I know that my son is going to miss me a lot but I am doing this for the best. I want him to play soccer . I will try to come back to Honduras for an year or two, but meanwhile I will work over there. I have you another great news and that is that I have a girlfriend from high school, I will try to contact her the sooner as possible, she may help me with the residency program because she is a lawyer. I have already paid for an apartment near downtown. I will go on several try outs to see if one of those team in Spain can give me a job. Here I was one of the best defenders, I hope that They can see me play. I have my manager that had talked with several teams from here about me, and he is telling me that I might have a chance to play. I have spent every time of my life playing as a professional player. If I get a team to choose me, I might also be in the national team. I am only 18 years old, I have a future over me.
From your friend.
